@whats_not_taught: And a finishing program or course really wouldn’t be outrageous to see kids enrolled in #cotillion #blackparents #jackandjill #finedining #etiquette
My daughter goes to a private Quaker school & they focus on this immensely.

My kids get gifts from people all the time simply because they know how to move in spaces. I didn't have anyone teaching me as my mom passed away when I young. I was learning while teach them. We're our favorite guests because we literally have long dinners to talk and check in. It was hard work but I'm so proud.

this is the difference between raising children and letting them grow up. A lot of children are just growing up in their household, but no one was intentional about what they learned socially, culturally or emotionally and it shows.

I literally remember as a child sitting at dinner or brunch with my family and watching other little kids run wild around the restaurant and thinking my parents would never let me out the house again 😂

This is spot on. To expand, I think some adults could benefit from learning social fluency from other adults received this type of parenting - instead of shunning it because it’s foreign to them. I know this will require them to humble themselves and admit what they don’t know but it will only help their next generation if they pass it down.

I preach this to my kids constantly. I am fussing/teaching these skills so when you're in rooms you won't feel lost/misplaced. They can hold conversation, way comfortably and move gracefully.

When an adult mostly a adult family member gives my children something I make sure they call them and thank you

You’re right. That training is intentional. I take my little ones as early as when they can sit. Now my 4 year old is a pro conversationalist

Growing up in the Haitian household this was the norm and this is how I raise my children now.

Absolutely we only know what we know after we learn what we know. If we don’t know these conventions, we can learn and pass onto our kids.
