Exactly why I correct people when they assume all Witches are Wiccan — we are not.

Good post! But for those rushing out to join a coven, be aware that authoritarianism can be just as toxic on the micro level as more traditional American religion. From personal experience with a Gardnerian, traditional group, I witnessed the High Priestess banishing members for perceived disobedience, causing others to be shunned and humiliated, cursing (ritually, formally), and in general striking out at anyone who didn’t toe the line. And in the second coven I tried, I found much of the same. I began to believe the DSM needed a new category of illness - “Witch Queen Complex.” My point - approach with eyes wide open, don’t make excuses, and be ready to step away. Just like any other group of “believers.” And best wishes you meet with better luck.

Doreen Valiente's works on religious and ritual witchcraft are widely used by most modern witches (even non-Wiccan witches) today. While it's important to recognize and appreciate her guiding Wicca away from a patriarchal foundation, I think it's also important to acknowledge matriarchies are also imperfect when they ignore our intersectionality. Doreen Valiente for instance was a member of a British white nationalist group, and later, a further right neo-Nazi group through the 1970s.

Thank you for looking at this as an opportunity to see what happens when women take over a religion! And thanks to the commenter who said “hey it can get bad too”. Because women are still human. Just because we *tend* towards xyz direction more than men, doesn’t remover our ability to cause harm. Harm just presents differently and maybe less often – but we are still human. In the various explorations of the human experience we need to always be cognizant of the consequences of our actions. In this I like the sometimes seen Wiccan creed “harm to none”.

Wicca is not practiced almost entirely by women. What a wild thing to say. You might mean Dianic Wicca.

This is exactly what Weber called the paradox of rationalization: attempts to solve suffering using the same worldview that produces it increase suffering by tightening the “iron cage” of self‑reference and this is what your doing... If the mechanism producing suffering is still running, any “solution” generated inside it becomes another output of the same malfunction. You can’t fix suffering from inside the process that’s generating it. That’s just the loop.

Hang on, all of those things except last are explicit in Gardenerian Wicca. All. The downside is that Traditional Witchcraft in its various roots has been reduced in a major way to what had little to no history : crystal trinkets mined from continents away, essential oils, & scented multi-hued candles. Much better: when both genders contribute.

yeah, seen it first hand . Many of the older more mature practioners remain in a solitary position within it . So many different paths etc means lots and lots of bitchin . Men bitch too for sure 😁♎
