My former partner suffered from bipolar disorder. During our relationship, I took on a significant amount of responsibility for her and her six-year-old son. I also took care of the household, the bills, and her dog.
Throughout the relationship, I experienced repeated infidelity. She cheated on me five times. Despite this, I was frequently made to feel that the problems within the relationship were my fault. For approximately three years, I tried to cope with the situation while increasingly experiencing emotional pressure and manipulation.
Eventually, I decided that the relationship had to end and asked her to leave the home. I deliberately chose a weekend when her son was staying with his biological father, so that he would not have to witness the confrontation or be exposed to the situation.
During the process of her leaving the home, the situation escalated and became physically violent. I was punched approximately five times and was also struck in the face with a door.
The events had a significant impact on me. After approximately three years of what had become a highly distressing and emotionally damaging relationship, I sought professional psychological help in order to process what had happened and regain my mental and emotional stability.
I am now happily married and have a son with my wife. My current relationship and family life are fundamentally different. I experience mutual respect, stability, commitment and support within my family, with the well-being of our family being a priority for both of us.
Looking back, I am particularly grateful that I eventually found the strength to end the previous relationship, seek professional help and rebuild my life. I am now in a stable and loving family environment, and I consider that one of the most important positive changes in my life.
