I’d argue that Tim Curry’s Pennywise is creepier, and I say that because of how normal and unassuming it appears at first glance. The costume itself is really simple, but at the same time; it’s far more accurate to the kind of outfit you’d see a clown performer wear at a real-life carnival. It isn’t until you get a closer look that you realise something isn’t quite right; and there’s a very natural, uncanny look to Curry’s Pennywise that Skårsgard’s version just doesn’t have. To me, Skårsgard’s Pennywise always had more of an overly menacing, high-quality cosplay vibe to it. It looks cool, but it’s deliberately designed with “scary” and “alarming” in mind, rather than something that not only looks friendly and inviting— but could also genuinely lure a child into a false sense of safety.
