Lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona I remember looking up and seeing something that almost looked alive. Deep inside the flowing sandstone, I noticed a strange formation that looked like the head of a snake. And then I noticed the four little dark spots. At the time, I didn’t know if anyone else had photographed the same formation. Years later, while going through my photographs, I started searching for it. Then I found another photographer’s photograph showing almost the same rock formation—with those same distinctive dark spots. That was the clue. My photograph wasn’t just a random shape that happened to look like a snake. It was the same formation. Different photographer. Different angle. Same piece of sandstone. 🐍 Lower Antelope Canyon is known by the Navajo name Hasdez twazi’, referring to its spiral rock arches. The National Park Service describes Lower as the narrower, V-shaped section, with twisting sandstone formations and stairs through the canyon. The canyon itself is a reminder that nature doesn’t need to be carved into art. Water, wind, sediment, and time did the work. We just have to look carefully enough to see what is already there. Sometimes the best part of photography isn’t taking the picture. It’s discovering the story inside it years later. 📸 ⸻ 📸 Original photograph by Lucian Vuong.
