@theladyalchemist: Here is the hard truth: access is not affection. Proximity is not loyalty. Familiarity is not love. Some people want the backstage pass so they can report to the audience you did not invite. Some people will offer advice that shrinks you because making you small is easier to manage. Some will only show up when showing up,is giving them a story to tell about themselves. If you do not decide what your energy costs, the discount hunters will decide for you and then return the item after wearing it out. So I changed the locks. I put a price on my peace, and the currency is respectful. I stopped setting myself on fire to keep people who bring ice comfortable. I learned the difference between a circle and a chain: a circle protects; a chain restrains. I want corners—people who brace the structure when the wind argues with the walls. If your applause is conditional, your access is, too. If your empathy expires when I excel, your seat is gone when I eat. I do not explain my boundaries to people who benefit from my lack of them. Focus became my shelter. Silence became my filter. I do not perform struggle to make my blessings digestible. I do not translate my shine into a language that flatters insecurity. I used to over-explain to be understood; now I over-deliver and let the results do the talking. Growth is not rude. Distance is not drama. Declining invitations that drain me is not arrogance; it is maintenance. My attention is a garden, not a landfill. If it does not plant, it can not stay. I know the disguises. Envy comes dressed as concern. Control pretends to be guidance. Critique shows up as care but only visits when there is blood to sniff. I ask better questions now: Does this person celebrate my growth when it costs them attention? Do they clap in the dark when no one can see them clapping? Do they comfort me without needing credit? Do they tell me the truth even when it might move me away from them? If the answers are no, I love from far, and I mean far like another timezone. Here is another hard truth: everybody in your circle is not in your corner, and not everyone outside your circle is your enemy. Some strangers will water you more than relatives. Some mentors you have never met will teach you through their example. Some doors are not locked; they are just not yours. Do not waste your key on rooms where your name is only whispered. Build where you are wanted, not where you are tolerated. A seat at the table means nothing if you are always the meal. Protect your peace like it pays your bills because it does. Guard your focus like it keeps your heart beating because it does. Move with quiet authority. Let your boundaries be unmistakable, and your gratitude be loud. Choose the long road that keeps your spirit clean over the shortcut that stains your name. Keep your chin high, your steps sure, your circle small, and your corner strong. Walk forward, not to prove them wrong, but to prove yourself right. And when you arrive, let the sound of your joy be the final word, the kind that does not ask for applause—only space, only respect, only truth."
