@pitochk: This topic is personal to me. For a long time, I lived with that knot inside, that feeling that something was wrong even when I couldn’t explain what. When it stays long enough, you almost forget what it feels like to live without it. Anxiety has an evolutionary purpose. Anticipating danger helped our ancestors prepare for what might happen next. It made them more alert, more cautious, more likely to notice a threat before it reached them. We still carry that ability. There is no single “anxiety centre” in the brain. Anxiety involves networks that connect threat detection, memory, attention and the perception of our own bodies. The amygdala helps detect meaningful threats. The hippocampus provides context from past experiences. The prefrontal cortex helps us interpret the situation and regulate our response. When these networks anticipate danger, they can recruit the body’s stress systems. Sympathetic nerves and adrenaline prepare us to act: the heart beats faster, breathing changes, muscles tighten. A slower hormonal pathway involving the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and adrenal glands can release cortisol, helping sustain that readiness. Those physical sensations can themselves become something to worry about. You notice your heartbeat, interpret it as a warning, and become even more alert. The brain and body keep feeding information back to each other, sometimes maintaining the anxiety long after the original trigger has passed. Like other systems in the body, this protective machinery can become dysregulated. It can respond too strongly, too often, or in situations that are safe. Genetics, prolonged stress and learned experiences can all contribute. There is no single chemical imbalance that explains everyone’s anxiety. Anxiety itself is nothing to be ashamed of or frightened of. But it deserves attention, especially when it begins to shape your sleep, your choices or your everyday life. Understanding it can help. So can getting support and treatment when needed. #Anxiety #psychology #MentalHealth #HumanBrain #edit
