When I finally got serious about fixing my gut, my diet changed in 4 big ways. These moved the needle most. 1. Reduced fiber Yes, the opposite of what everyone tells you. I couldn’t tolerate it at all, and forcing it because every doctor and guru says you need it made things worse. So I cut it out for months. Meanwhile I figured out WHY fiber was a problem (overgrowths, leaky gut, slow motility) and addressed that. Once those were handled, I added it back. No issues. Now I eat a ton of it. 2. Meal spacing When my gut issues started I was eating 4 meals a day plus snacking while I worked. Most days there wasn’t a single hour where I wasn’t consuming something. The gut has a cleaning process that runs between meals. It needs about 3 hours without calories to do its job. SIBO was one of my issues and constant eating was feeding it directly. So I started spacing meals 3+ hours apart, every day. 3. Cooking myself Every time I ate out, I paid for it. Restaurant, friend’s house, anywhere that wasn’t my kitchen. Most restaurants cook with seed oils and cheap ingredients because their margins are tight. So I meal prepped and cooked everything myself until things were under control. It sucked, but it was necessary. 4. Tracking Most people have no idea how many calories, how much protein, or which vitamins and minerals they’re actually getting. That’s navigating blind, especially when certain gut issues need a specific diet structure for a period of time. I tracked my food, symptoms and BMs in Cronometer for weeks. That’s how I found the patterns. These 4 alone didn’t fix my gut. Testing, targeted supplements and lifestyle shifts were part of it too. But these were the diet changes that made the biggest difference. If you’re dealing with gut issues and feel stuck, I write emails every week meant for you. Lessons from helping 400+ people solve chronic gut issues. DM me GUT and I’ll send the link.
