@adivunsolicited: Having a platform isn't the same as having perspective. Recently, Da'Vinchi sat down with Cam Newton and said some things about Black Americans, slavery, and race in this country that deserve a closer look. In this video I break it down through critical theory, the study of how power, media, and social hierarchy operate. What I cover: 🔹 Racial capitalism: Why "everyone practiced slavery" flattens a system that was hereditary, racialized, and built for profit, and why its effects (Black Codes, redlining, wealth denial) are still running today. 🔹 Ethnic distancing: What it means when someone raised and built in America steps outside the identity of "Americans" to signal "I'm not like them." 🔹 Racial buffering: How the U.S. racial order can hold up some Black immigrants as proof that the problem with Black Americans is cultural, not structural 🔹 The politics of respectability: Why adopting dominant behaviors to earn acceptance doesn't dismantle the system. 🔹 The immigration history: Before 1965, U.S. immigration law favored northern Europeans. The Civil Rights Movement, led by Black Americans, helped create the climate for the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which opened the door to the Caribbean, Latin America, and Africa. 🔹 The prison myth: The idea that states plan prisons based on third-grade reading scores is a talking point that keeps circulating. Literacy and incarceration are connected, but because poverty and underfunded schools drive both, not because anyone is building cells off a test score. White supremacist talking points are usually built on lies, and they spread because they sound like common sense. If you don't know the history, you have nothing to check them against. And when you distance yourself from the group a talking point targets, it's easy to repeat it without asking where it came from. This isn't about attacking anyone from the diaspora. Solidarity across the diaspora starts with knowing the history, and it means holding the people holding the microphone to a higher standard. 📚 Reading list The frameworks: • Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition, Cedric J. Robinson (racial capitalism) • Black Identities: West Indian Immigrant Dreams and American Realities, Mary C. Waters (ethnic distancing and how West Indian immigrants navigate U.S. race) • Racism without Racists, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva (how the U.S. racial order operates and sustains itself) • Righteous Discontent: The Women's Movement in the Black Baptist Church, 1880-1920, Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham (the politics of respectability) #davinchi #BlackTikTok #criticaltheory #haitiantiktok #BlackHistory

I don't even know why a conversation this nuance took place on Cam's low vibrational show. 🫤

It's exhausting to be us. We weren't taught hate, yet everyone hates us. I use to become upset, now it's just expected. It's not right but it's okay. We're learning not to care, but we will respond when need be.

I agree that this podcast was the wrong fit for this conversation, and Cam clearly missed a few important talking points. This topic deserves a more in-depth conversation with a different structure something like a panel discussion where multiple perspectives can be heard and explored. Healing and unity will not happen overnight; we have to take small steps toward understanding one another. At the end of the day, we are all Black, regardless of where we were born or where our families come from. Our shared history ultimately traces back to the motherland, Africa. We have far more similarities than differences. Instead of allowing those differences to divide us, we should use conversations like this to learn from each other, understand our different experiences, and find common ground. ❤️🖤

Exactly. He seemed to pick and choose when he wanted to be American and when he was Haitian based on what he felt was better.

Some of the responses towards Caribbean people though is a little offputting too because this is one man’s thought process not everyone and that tells me there’s more of an inner dialogue going on than we think

And this is why I thoroughly enjoy your content. Balance. Information-Knowledge. Context. Additionally feels like a conversation how I talk to the screen.

Hearing you say this is so refreshing! Especially the part about him intentionally separating himself from being American when it benefits him. I’ve been trying to explain this to both Haitians & Black Americans for hours lol

Who in the hell is he? The majority of people do not know him as a successful actor! From what I have learned against my will he was not the main character on All American nor any other movie/tv series he has been on!
