The movie follows Thomasin and her deeply religious, isolated family, who begin to fall apart after a real witch from the woods kidnaps and kills their baby. Later, the witch causes Caleb’s death, and the rest of the family dies one by one while they mistakenly believe that Thomasin is the witch. In the end, it is revealed that Black Phillip, the black goat, is actually the Devil. After losing her entire family, Thomasin makes a pact with him, follows him into the woods, joins a group of witches, and rises into the air with them. The irony is that Thomasin was never a witch when her family accused her of being one. Only at the end, after she has lost everything, does she actually choose to become one.
