This is actually really helpful for me to learn, because my mother can be incredibly bigoted about Islam. Out of nowhere, she’ll say, “The Quran is violent,” and my response is always, “Since when have you read the Quran?” And while you’re at it, maybe try reading the Christian Bible, because there is plenty of violence in there too. What I find especially interesting is the double standard. No matter where I travel—up and down I-26 in South Carolina, I-95, or I-4 in Florida—I see billboards telling me to repent, accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, or warning me about my sins. Outside my dog park, every Saturday and Sunday, Christians stand there with signs trying to convert people. I’ve had Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons show up at my door numerous times wanting to share their faith. Do you know who has never put up a billboard telling me what to believe or shown up at my door trying to convert me? Muslims.

The Ottoman Empire lasted more than a few centuries in control of many non-Muslim territories, and they never had a policy of forced conversion nor forced language/culture or conscription on their colonies (opposite to Christian colonies throughout history - see Virreinato de la Nueva España for a very good, and by good I mean gruesome example)...

there is no seperation of religion and state in islam. its not the same as Christianity there isnt anything to seperate from the state. there isnt a church/clergy model in islam. sharia does have public laws which a state may assert but that is the extent of it.
