Guys, let’s understand what is happening instead of just saying “the dollar has gone to 4,000.” What is really happening is that the Ugandan shilling is weakening against the US dollar. A few months ago, $1 was around UGX 3,500–3,700, and now it has moved above UGX 4,000.
This happens mainly because the demand for dollars is higher than the supply. Uganda needs dollars to pay for imported fuel, machinery, raw materials, goods and other imports. When many people and businesses are looking for dollars at the same time, the dollar becomes more expensive in shillings.
For example, if you had $1,000 when the rate was 3,600, it was worth about UGX 3.6 million. At 4,000, the same $1,000 is worth about UGX 4 million.
So it is not simply that “Americans increased the price of the dollar.” It means our shilling has lost value against the dollar. This can be good for someone receiving dollars from abroad, but difficult for people earning shillings because imported goods and fuel can become more expensive.
And please don't panic-buy dollars just because you see people talking about 4,000 on TikTok. Exchange rates can move in both directions. We need to understand WHY the rate is moving before making financial decisions. 🇺🇬💵
