I read the story behind this poem, it's all about a defeated warrior who had been a chief, a commander, a respected warrior, a man accustomed to commanding others and a horseman who had fought in battles. At the moment he sang the poem, he was captured, restrained, awaiting execution, separated from his people and unable to return home. His captors even tied his tongue with a leather strap because they feared that he would use his famous poetic ability to insult and ridicule them. They weren't merely afraid of his sword, they were afraid of his tongue because his poetry was powerful enough to damage their honour. When Abd Yaghuth realized that his death was unavoidable, he asked that his tongue be released so that he could speak and he apparently promised not to use his speech merely to abuse his captors. So they released him and instead of giving them an ordinary plea for mercy, he composed what became one of the most famous examples of “self-elegy” (رثاء النفس) He was writing/singing his own elegy while he was still alive and awaiting death. In one sentence, be is a defeated warrior-chief, captured in battle and condemned to death, used his final moments to say farewell to his friends, remember the man he once was, lament the loss of his freedom and honour, and compose an extraordinary poetic farewell to his own life. That is why the opening “ألا لا تلوماني” — “Do not blame me” carries much more weight than it appears to at first glance.

This poem is by the Yemeni poet Abd Yaghuth al-Harithi (of the Madhhij tribe). After he was taken prisoner, an enemy woman saw him in chains and laughed at him; in response, he recited this magnificent poem.

A Story of Solidarity: The Context: Qadir Abd Yaghuth ibn al-Harith al-Harithi led his tribe during the "Second Day of Kulab" against the Banu Tamim. His people were defeated, but he stayed behind out of a sense of honor and tribal loyalty, only to be captured by the Banu Tamim. A Moment of Vulnerability and Pride: The Banu Tamim refused to accept a ransom for Abd Yaghuth; instead, they resolved to execute him in retaliation for their leader, who had been killed in the battle. They bound his mouth to prevent him from composing satirical verses against them. A Plea to Lament Himself: Abd Yaghuth asked his captors to unbind his tongue so he could compose a lament for himself and condemn the companions who had abandoned him. He then recited his famous poem: "Oh, do not reproach me; the suffering I endure is reproach enough." The Final Scene: The verses vividly depict his state—bound and facing imminent death—and express his wish that he had perished on the battlefield at Barama rather than enduring this humiliation. Al-Jahiz regarded this as one of the most authentic and finest elegies ever composed in the face of death.
