@3mnews: President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons as part of activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary. The decision was taken under Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultation with the Council of State. The Presidency described the move as an act of mercy and national reflection to commemorate the significant national milestone. The largest group among the beneficiaries comprises 819 first-time offenders, who have been granted outright release. Also granted outright release are 13 convicted persons aged 70 and above, six seriously ill inmates and two persons under special recommendations. Meanwhile, the sentences of 11 people on death row have been commuted to life imprisonment, while six persons serving life sentences will have their sentences reduced to 20-year definite terms. Three additional persons were granted pardon following petitions, while three others fall under a separate category outlined in the presidential decision. Relevant state institutions have been directed to take the necessary steps to implement the President’s decision. The announcement was made on Monday, October 5, 2026, as Ghana prepares to commemorate 70 years since gaining independence. #ghanatiktok🇬🇭 #tiktokghana🇬🇭
