Endo nurse- however the doc says it (different docs say it differently) is what I go with. I have a doc that pronounces centimeters sahn-ta-meters though and that really makes me itch

My masters level anatomy class I gave a presentation, I said du-odd-en-em. My professor KNOCKED ME OFF A POINT saying I pronounced it wrong.

I will die on this hill: if you’re American and say “DOO-oh-DEE-num” then you had a British/australian professor and/or attendings who said it that way and that’s how you learned it. Or you learned it from professors/attendings who had British/australian attendings of professors. Because nobody just decides, without it being a major part of their medical upbringing, to say it that way.

I pronounce it the same as you because how would you say duodenal if you pronounce it do-o-deen-um? Would it be do-o-deen-al? Nahhh that just isn’t right lol

I had a manager who pronounced ‘success’ as ‘sussess’ and I just wanted to clear my throat each time. Maybe I’m wrong and there’s nothing wrong about that but that is a hard c sound in my book.

The one I can’t decide how to pronounce is heterogenous. Do you say het-er-o-gEnous or heter-og-enous?

I pronounce it like Duo-Denim. I use your second pronunciation but a soft e, not a long eee sound.

Helppp I had no idea about this difference 😂 I’ve always said it Duo-deenum. Not British it’s just the way I was taught in college!

I say it how you do and everyone I’ve worked with says it that way. There was one time someone tried telling our forensic pathologist he was saying it wrong and the FP responded saying “well I could say it that way but then we would both be wrong.” I still laugh about it 😂

If Doowad-ennum came from your lips during a surgical M&M presentation, the chairman stopped you mid sentence and told you that it was originally called Dew-Oh-Dee-Num because it was an organ called such for being twelve fingers in length. Same lashings came with diverticulum versus diverticula. Diverticuli resulted in a crucifixion during your rounds presentation. To this day, when i hear them pronounced any other way, I have an internal visceral reaction.

You’re saying it correctly. That’s the scientific nomenclature - emphasis is on the 3rd syllable from the last. Thats why we say bi O lo gy instead of bio lo gy. or CHEM mi stry instead of chem MI stry. or psy CHOL lo gy instead of psycho lo gy. People
