🇺🇸 February 5, 2012 — Graham, Washington. What began as a supervised custody visit ended in one of the most horrifying family murder-suicides in modern American true crime history. Josh Powell, already the primary suspect in the mysterious 2009 disappearance of his wife Susan Cox Powell, murdered his two young sons — 7-year-old Charlie and 5-year-old Braden — before killing himself in a deliberately set house fire. When the court-appointed social worker arrived to drop the boys off for their scheduled visit, Powell suddenly pulled the children inside the home and locked the door behind him, trapping everyone outside. Authorities later revealed he had already prepared the house by covering parts of it with gasoline beforehand. Moments later, he attacked both boys with a hatchet before igniting the house in flames. Emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes, but the fire spread too quickly for anyone inside to be saved. Autopsies later confirmed the children suffered fatal injuries before dying from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning as the home burned around them. The tragedy unfolded after years of suspicion surrounding the disappearance of Susan Powell, whose body has never been found.
