the British social class system is based on a hell of a lot more than how much money you have

Its more classist to assume they're poor because they find the lifestyle tacky and off putting

Class is not just about money. A tradie is working class no matter how much they make. So yes it is still classist

Gas engineer here. Just bought a 3 bed, fully renovated it, had a son, told Mrs don’t worry about going back to work and going Dubai for 2 weeks at Xmas. Sister is with a tradie and they’re in 100k equity on their home, own two others and go away every 6 weeks. Tradies are living the dream that’s why we say it to each other all the time 👌👌😂😂

That type of person is considered ‘lower class’ despite how much money they have. That’s why they called that take classist.

You can be culturally working class but not economically working class. I tradie who earns 95k a year can be culturally working class because it is a typical working class job.

Class and wealth aren’t the same thing. Tradies are looked down on because it’s deemed a working class career. Middle class people are told to go to uni and you’ll succeed but in this climate it’s not the case at all. Tradies can build successful careers and Looking down on them and getting annoyed when they can afford a nice new-build home - comes across as class snobbery and jealousy.

Tradies are the only ones doing well in this economy and the average white collar middle class is the one strapped for cash 😭

I maybe just don’t understand the class system stuff, but I always thought of the British NPC life as being middle class? Like BMW on finance, wife always gets her nails, lashes and lips done, new build house, Ibiza inclusive every year etc etc was all money money money? I thought the discourse on this was just “imagine lacking this much personality”

Money does not equal class. Sociologist Pierre Bordieux outlines this concept and one component of it is social capital, which describes the taste and habits you have, the same way tennis and football are both sports but attract completely different groups

It's sad that such a simple lifestyle is now a luxury. A house, a dog, a holiday outside of the country once a year, multiple kids- how many regular people in their 20s even dream of that anymore?

Money /= class in the uk btw. Also most trades don’t actually make that much it’s another myth. It’s very scaleable though if you know how to do it. Most people can get on the property ladder with a small amount of effort
