Weylynn Lee Bruce :
Tolkien's work was so prolific because it gave a mythology back to the people of England who had theirs lost due to colonization by the Roman's. he accomplished this by studying language and mythology of the surrounding people's. Smaug was a recreation of Fafnir from the saga of Sigurd. Fafnir, the dragon, talked. and the saga itself defined much of the basis of the dragon characters through history in Europe. These dragons aren't monsters merely because of their gargantuan forms, it's their intellect. They're more than monsters in their stories. they're characters. which is much more entertaining in every way anyways. But in the heart of Tolkien lore, villains aren't necessarily big threats because they are super powerful. They are conniving, manipulative, and cunning. The Rings of Power actually does a great job portraying this with "Sauron". but his Lord, Morgoth, was no different. A lot of people can resonate to the power of evil being not from the power of evil people, but the dishonesty and malice within those people to get and hold that power. Tolkien's philosophy behind good and evil made his characters and stories what they were. The simple evil of falsehoods for power and the simple acts of kindness and love that keep the darkness at bay
