we did a large erp implementation moving from cobol based erp. our mandate was no customization only out of the box. it lasted 3 weeks before the first thing that just "had" to be changed because it's they way we've already been done.

I did a massive ERP upgrade... on go live date, we were ready with troubleshooting and help desk ready to go for anything and everything. turns out there was one field on the home page that didn't display correctly. that was it. it was a massive success. but to get there, you need excellent teams and project management that understands the importance of real testing and learning not just blowing smoke. our CEO was blown away by how it went.

This is so interesting to me as a former Red Man / MRC Global after a "merger of equals". Red Man had a more modern Web Based ERP System compared to McJunkins Mainframe system, and when starting discussion on combining systems they decided to move everyone to the mainframe system even though user feedback on the combined test users in 20 branches overwhelmingly chose the modern web based system. That didn't matter to leadership so instead they decided to "webify" the mainframe system with wrappers that took 4 years to implement, which by the time completed I left along with several IT members on both sides.

I was going to say, I was shocked to hear a distribution company had a modern ERP. I joined one in 2015 that still 3way matched everything, and used adding machines (tabletop calculator with the paper tape) for tolerance exceptions’ approval documentation 🙃

Oracle Cloud is a massive step back in available functionality from older on prem versions. Working on MSFT platforms, we've won business over and over again because the Oracle cloud offering is so weak in comparison.
