I think there’s a big difference between saying, “I’m not equipped to be in a relationship with someone carrying a lot of trauma,” and saying, “You should run away from her.” The first is a boundary. The second turns a vulnerable person into a warning sign. Someone’s trauma can absolutely make a relationship more complicated. You’re allowed to decide that you don’t have the capacity for it. But that doesn’t make the person dangerous, broken, or unworthy of love. Sometimes the lonely girl with the difficult past is not someone you need to run from. She’s just someone who has been through things she never deserved and may need patience, boundaries, and a partner who knows what they can realistically give. And if you can’t be that person, that’s okay. Just don’t make her wounds sound like a reason the world should be afraid of her. You’re allowed to leave a relationship you can’t handle. But turning someone’s trauma into a warning label and telling people to “run” says a lot more about you than it does about her.
