@josephmartinengineer: This cannon vanishes every time it fires 😮 Around 1900, U.S. coastal forts hid huge guns behind a thick concrete-and-earth wall. When the gun fires, its own recoil swings it down behind the wall and lifts a massive lead counterweight (45 tons, says the National Park Service sign at Battery Granger). Oil-filled brakes soak up most of the kick, catches hold it down, and the crew reloads under cover. Then a crewman trips the catches, the counterweight sinks and the gun swings back up, ready to fire. From a ship eight miles out, all you'd see is smoke and a wall. No engine: the recoil itself pays for the next shot. ⚙️💥 (These guns never fired at an enemy warship in combat; the hit on the ship is a dramatization.) Would you have spotted the gun? My only question is. How do you adjust it's aim. I didn't see an angle adjusting rod or a way to move it right or left

What if the recoil isn't enough to push the cannon onto the catch? How do they reload it then?

amianyway :

Dark _Lord :

I wonder if it was actually battle tested somewhere? It’s a cool design but seems like it’s asking for the dark lord Murphy himself to screw with it

Wait, so if it’s as heavy as it was, why was the radical for like the scope moving? Would it be a stationary firing target
