Why The Flash Can Phase Through Buildings but Does Not Fall Through the Ground
The Flash is one of the fastest and most powerful superheroes in the DC universe. Most people know him for being able to run at incredible speeds, but one of his most interesting abilities is something called phasing. The Flash can vibrate his body so quickly that he can pass through solid objects such as walls, doors, and even entire buildings. At first, this creates an obvious question: if the Flash can make himself intangible enough to pass through a concrete wall, why does he not immediately fall through the ground? The ground is made of atoms just like a building is. If his molecules can pass through the molecules of a wall, it seems like they should also pass through the molecules underneath his feet. The answer is that the Flash’s phasing is not something that happens automatically. It is a controlled ability connected to his molecular vibrations, his interaction with matter, and the Speed Force. When all of these ideas are considered together, the Flash can phase through a building without falling through the Earth because he chooses what matter he phases through and can stop phasing almost instantly.
To understand this, it is important to understand what “solid” actually means. On the atomic level, objects are not completely solid. Everything around us is made of atoms, and atoms themselves contain enormous amounts of empty space compared with the size of their nuclei. An atom has a tiny nucleus surrounded by electrons existing in regions around it. However, this does not mean that people could normally walk through walls. When the atoms in someone’s hand approach the atoms in a wall, electromagnetic interactions between their electrons prevent the atoms from simply passing through one another. Quantum-mechanical principles also help explain why ordinary matter resists being compressed into the same states. Together, these effects create what humans experience as solidity.
The Flash’s fictional phasing ability basically allows him to overcome the normal interaction between his body and another piece of matter. He vibrates his molecules at extremely high frequencies and adj
