#onthisday two years ago I waved a white flag… I couldn’t do it anymore. This was the last time I was ever admitted to South Shore Hospital before being accepted into the liver program at Beth Israel and being transferred lights and sirens a week later. At this point I was being admitted to the hospital every 2 weeks, if not less. I was being told I had colitis, pancreatitis, an angry gallbladder, cyclic vomiting syndrome, and so on…. But no one told me my liver was actively failing until they had a surgeon come talk to me about removing my gallbladder.. This surgeon refused to operate on me because I had cirrhosis—this was the first time I was hearing I had cirrhosis. I stayed inpatient at the hospital and started my research. My mind was racing learning about my high chances/likeliness of mortality, what transplant was, what liver disease and cirrhosis in general was… I was alone and confused. I demanded to be transferred to either Mass General Hospital or Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center in Boston MA. BIDMC responded first and accepted my case. I waited for a bed on the transplant floor to open up and as soon as it did, i was transferred by ambulance in the middle of the night lights and sirens going. I arrived and was greeted by a nurse along with Dr. Bonder.. Dr. Bonder was stern and practically yelling at me telling me they know I’m lying about how much I drink & that the labs don’t lie. He mentioned that if I continue to drink then my chances of dropping dead next week were high… If I do quit drinking, I will only live 6-12 months and that I would need a liver transplant in order to survive. I cried and called him an asshole. It took about 24-hours to come to terms with my reality. I can never ever consume alcohol again if I plan on attempting to have any type of future. So right then, my decision was made. I cannot drink alcohol and I will not drink alcohol. 2 years later, I am transplanted & cirrhosis free… and best of all sober. I am able to live my life again. I don’t feel shackled by alcohol. I feel like ME again and I’ve gotten my weird back 🫶🏻 I’ve said it before and I will say it again; The one and only thing I am thankful for cirrhosis for is that it gave me the strength to get sober. 💚💚💚 We do Recover 💪🏻 #sobriety #alcoholic #cirrhosis #livertransplant
