People don’t get that him not liking her for a lot of it WAS a big part of why she actually felt safe enough to feel something towards him. After being dictated by the whims of men who desired her and wanted to make her theirs all her life, here was the first man who didn’t want to be controlled by her, who wanted her out of his life, who called her out for not being fully honest because “like recognizes like.” I think the only genuine smile and spill of emotion we see from Cathy is when she can’t hold back her expression when he told her she’s like him. All the other smiles could be interpreted as duplicitous, but her near giggle in that moment is dead honest because Charles didn’t hold anything over her and there was no strategic advantage to smiling then.
