Good exercise! But did you know that much of the traditional comparison between a manager (boss) and a leader can be traced back to Abraham Zaleznik's 1977 Harvard Business Review article, "Managers and Leaders: Are They Different?" The article presented his perspective rather than findings from an empirical research study. Joseph C. Rost later challenged traditional thinking about leadership in his book Leadership for the Twenty-First Century. His research examined 587 works and 221 definitions of leadership. Here's where I think this exercise could be improved to better reflect 21st-century talent development. What we're often comparing is a good manager versus a bad manager, not necessarily a manager versus a leader. Why? Because a manager is a position of authority, while a leader is a role anyone can perform. You don't need a management title to be a leader. Look up the word "leader" in the dictionary. You might be surprised by what you find! I particularly appreciate Andy Dix's definition of a leader in business: "A leader is someone who offers a new vision in response to perceived dissatisfaction with the current or future state and is courageous enough to influence others, without relying on authority, to drive meaningful change for everyone's benefit." I enjoyed your exercise, and I believe it has value. My concern is that talent development needs to stop treating managers and leaders as synonymous. When we do, we unintentionally diminish the value and potential of everyone who isn't in a management position. I know that's not your intent, and I appreciate you sharing the exercise. Talent Development 2.0 is about recognizing that anyone can be a leader, regardless of their position. Thank you! #collaborate #doingthechores
