@northsidevillagehomes: If you live in the Heights or Northside, you’ve probably heard that development is why your property taxes keep going up. Development can absolutely push property values higher. But that’s only half the equation. According to a Houston Chronicle analysis, the average homeowner’s tax bill from the four Harris County taxing entities controlled by Commissioners Court is up about 60% since 2019. The tax rate itself did NOT increase 60%, and rates actually fell for several years. But the direction has changed, and this year Commissioners Court approved the highest combined county-controlled rate in recent county history. So I looked at who voted for it, who opposed it, who’s up for election, and what the candidates say they’ll do about property taxes. Property value × tax rate = your tax bill. If we’re going to argue about why housing is becoming less affordable, we should understand both sides of that equation. Early voting starts October 19. #Houston #HoustonHeights #NorthsideVillage #NearNorthside #HarrisCounty

There’s a double feature about property values considering higher value on each parcel means more tax revenue. A vacant/old church is an absolute deficit, for example, considering that it pays more taxes. A decrepit house 5 minutes away from downtown is also a deficit that would be better turned into a high-value parcel with a higher home value. In my opinion, and plenty of people don’t like to hear it, is that higher value properties for the city and county contribute more to keeping property tax increases away. Same reason why I found issues with Comptroller Chris Hollins when he was angry about the Woodlands being off the table with the $50 million payout to Houston for preventing annexation. Why spend more money sending city services far out instead of investing in the neighborhoods well within Houston city limits? We should be improving these neighborhoods and getting more tax revenue that way by better redevelopment.
