i once was sitting for a combative schizophrenic patient and oml i’ve never been more scared. they were very big, im 5’3 and 93 pounds, they towed over me. the entire night they screamed bloody murder and got aggressive quite a few times. what made it worse was we were in kinda a secluded part of the unit for better safety of the staff and patients. around 2 in the morning they jumped out of bed and were just being very agitated, i tried to click my safety button on my badge for back up, but it failed and didn’t send out the alert. before i could get out of the room the patient lunged at me with intent to harm me. luckily the nurse realized he was late on a med and came in right when the patient had gotten to me. they put the patient in restraints for the rest of the night, but did not move me from the room. the rest of my shift they screamed bloody murder and kept trying to get out of the restraints. i notified management that morning because no one had after the incident. for the rest of the patients stay they had to have 2 security guards in the room at all times.

Sincerely though, you have no idea the relief we feel when a confused bed-jumper gets an in-person sitter. And my unit will be there is seconds if you blow that whistle. -RN

The sitters at my hospital, get a special training and can go hands-on and restrain patients. It’s kind of funny to see our psych unit is low-key ran by a bunch of-year-olds.

Use to be a sitter for almost 2 years the slow ass response time from security is why I switched departments, I never was hurt by a pt thankfully but I’ve been nose to nose with a pt trying to calm them till help got there to many times
