this is why I don’t use Aquaphor! It may “FEEL” good and even help calm eczema symptoms… but the research makes it very clear what it CAN do and it’s something I’m not willing to take the risk for. Lanolin is a derivative of sheep’s wool and is an ingredient in Aquaphor (and MANY other “eczema friendly” products). I had no idea until a dermatologist mentioned it while treating me for a recurring staph infection after I told her I was using Aquaphor. After more than 20 years of living with eczema, no one had ever explained this to me. In this video, Dr. Ian Myles, an NIH allergy & eczema researcher, explains that lanolin is the 10th most potent skin sensitizer, meaning it has the potential to cause allergic contact dermatitis 😱😱😱. Once someone becomes sensitized, future exposure to lanolin can trigger reactions! Since learning this - and later finding that removing ingredients like lanolin improved my own skin- I haven’t touched Aquaphor and instead choose 100% petroleum jelly (Vaseline) as my occlusive or moisturizer. This isn’t to say everyone with eczema should stop using Aquaphor or that they are allergic to lanolin. But if your eczema isn’t improving, keeps flaring, or you’ve never had patch testing, it may be worth talking with your dermatologist about whether an ingredient allergy could be contributing.
