“The literal "strange anomalies" most famously linked to this exact timeframe are the 1561 celestial phenomenon over Nuremberg and the 1566 phenomenon over Basel. Mass broadsheets published woodcuts detailing "battling" rods, spheres, discs, and crosses in the sky at dawn. While historically viewed as religious portents or warnings of famine, modern meteorologists attribute these bizarre sightings to complex atmospheric optics. The severe cold of the Little Ice Age filled the troposphere with unique ice crystals, creating hyper-vivid, rare optical illusions such as sun dogs (parhelia), light pillars, and complex halo refractions that appeared to "move" as the sun rose through the frozen air.”
