Shenzhen was, when i was a child in the 70s, a fishing village. That is the real kicker

Visited Guangzhou, Shenzen, and Hong Kong 2 years ago. The density, infrastructure, and urbanization is ridiculous there. It was surreal seeing a ~30 story tall mixed use building with 7 floors under it and connected to a train station. And the mixed use building had a shopping mall, food court, grocery store, urgent care, hotels, apartments, and other amenities. You’d never find this kind of building in the US.

I joke about this often but I grew up in Portland which, around that time, was about 500,000 people and I always felt that was the big city. Then I moved to Chicago as an adult where I currently live today and I was like wow now THIS is the big city. Then you look at these cities in Asia and Chicago’s 3 million people looks quaint by comparison.

As a small city guy, I’m always fascinated by big city people. As a kid, i used to asked myself “Do they all know each other?”… Obviously not, but like how many people do they know? Who knows the most people? How are all these relationship webs interconnected? So fascinating!

How the F are they able to handle all of the goods infrastructure associated with 80 million people. We're talking about water, wastewater, electricity, transportation, food, etc.

Jokes on them. I am from a city in Norway with about 15 000 people and an hour drive to the nearest other similar sized city.

I actually have been to foshan. It’s a big hub for manufacturing furniture. This is one of the showrooms for international buyers, it’s literally like its own mall full of custom furniture

One of the reasons it’s so developed is because it was a British occupied territory

I was there in Guangzhou and it felt that big. I was there three days (in the pearl bay for 9) and in Guangzhou I felt like I saw maybe 3% of the city.
