As the husband, I find it really hard to ask for the gentleness and kindness without feeling like I'm just being too sensitive. Part of my inner voice just says I'm an adult and I shouldn't need to be talked to like I'm being gentle parented, and if I do I'm the problem.

Men value RESPECT almost above anything else. When speaking to a man harshly, especially at the opening of a conversation, it is VERY DIFFICULT to hear past the comment because there is a voice screaming inside his head that is saying “WHO IN THE HECK DO YOU THINK THAT YOU ARE TALKING TO?”. Especially if he is the primary bread winner, and go to person for the difficult stuff. After the comment, the adrenaline spikes, the nervous system spikes, the fight or flight system spikes, and all the words said afterwards sound like Charlie Brown’s teacher: “wahh wahh, wahh wahh wan wahh wahh”. Especially if they are the one the tone is generally always reserved for OR she has shown that she will lose her ever loving mind if he speaks to her in that manner. (Cue internal head conversation: “Woman, I don’t know who you think you are talking to, but you best back up, turn the volume and tone WAY BACK, and talk to me in the same manner that you do your parents, best friends, and hopefully your children… I don’t have to take this from you.” (Or anyone else)
