On this day, the 25th day of the Blessed month of Thout, Jonah the Prophet departed at a nearby city of Tyre at 101 years old. Jonah, the son of Amittai, from the tribe of Zebulun, he was from Gath Hepher which was his home-town nearby Nazareth of Galilee. He lived during the reign of Amaziah and Azariah, the kings of Judah and Jeroboam II, king of Israel from the year 783 B.C. to the year 743 B.C. Jonah was sent by God to preach to the people of Nineveh in Iraq, but Jonah initially resisted this task of the Lord for he was too afraid of the evil people that they would kill him. To escape this mission he headed to Tarshish, the opposite direction of Nineveh. He though he could escape the sight of God, and would be able to hide himself, but during the voyage, a storm arises. The people on the boat began to debate amongst themselves, “who angered the gods.” They began to hysterically pray to their false gods, and began to throw their cargo over board, and yet the ship was still sinking. Then Jonah full of repentance to the Lord, admitted that it was his disobedience to the One, True God who created the storm. The people threw him overboard then a great fish which the Lord had prepared, swallowed Jonah. After Jonah was thrown into the sea, the storm calmed, and the people began to praise the God, that Jonah had disobeyed. He spent three days and three nights in the belly of the fish, praying and repenting to God. God then orders the fish to vomit Jonah out on the shore of Nineveh. Jonah goes into the city full of grace and courage of the Holy Spirit and preaches that the city of Nineveh will be destroyed by God unless the people repent. They did so, they repented so much that from the king to the infants, tore their clothes and put ashes atop their heads and fasted for three days and three nights. God heard the people’s cry, and removed the wrath of His Mighty Hand. Jonah the Prophet returned to the land of Israel and lived in seclusion for the remaining years of his life. Jonah departed at a nearby city of Tyre at 101 years old. Jonah’s prayer and repentance in the belly of the fish foreshadows the three days and three nights our Lord, God, and Savior, Jesus Christ would spend in the tomb. Jonah went into the belly full of sin, he prayed, and came out as a new and ressurected man. This is just how Christ went into the tomb with all of the sins of the world that He willingly took on the Cross, took His chosen people out of Hades rejoicingly, and gloriously rose on the third day.
