Yup. This ain’t supposed to be a “badass” moment or version of Vegeta, it’s supposed to be him having a midlife crisis. I seen people complaining that Vegetas just being a bitch completely missing that’s that point

In my opinion, why this scene works for me so well compared to FUN DBZ is because you can hear the utter despair in Vegetas voice. For all of vegetas life he had 1 goal which was to basically kill Frieza snd rule the universe. Then it was to defeat goku, while hard those are inherently simple goals. So when Goku Dies he realizes he has nothing. The 7 year time gap we get hints that yes Vegeta has been more around and training but we get a little insight from Bulma that he hasn't been the same since Goku died or at least that's what he wants to believe. Vegeta loves bulma and trunks at this point, and that new emotion is complicated, its scary for him. So when he hears Goku is coming back he finally thinks he can put this skeleton in his closet away for good, when he sees goku power up and tap into SSJ3 he knows the last 7 years to him have been utterly useless. So he turns to Babidi. What I dont think people bring up enough is what Goku says to him. He simply can't fathom Vegeta doing something like this after the 7 years it caught him off guard completely. Vegeta allowing Babidi to take him over was him admitting that he couldn't handle the thought of other people actually loving him, it was an escape from something so foreign to him. which is why his sacrifice makes it better, I prefer the sacrifice in the og when he says"Yes I finally think I understand you know" he is referring to Goku, he never could understand the idea of sacrifice because he never had anyone he loved enough to sacrifice for. But then as he charges up he gets it, he understands finally.

You can genuinely hear the pain and confusion within the dub like he’s GENUINELY venting out to Goku, the only other Saiyan left in the world. He’s confused, conflicted about his emotions and this dub perfectly captures that unlike the original funimation dub.

Now that we have Kai Z Cut I hope more people come around on Kai the final chapters. No more green tint, cropped 16:9, or crappy music. There’s an option for the original Z kikuchi score or the Falconer score so everyone is happy

THANK YOU!! Like yes, the original Funimation dub has its moments but the English DBZ Kai dub captures what the original Japanese dub was trying to convey. Majin Vegeta is supposed to be an allegory for relapsing and his breakdown here isn’t supposed to sound “cool”, he’s supposed to sound desperate and emotional.

People don’t understand that this scene is supposed to be vegeta admitting he relapsed on purpose and he doesn’t know how to feel about it outside of beating Goku. Vegeta is SUPPOSED to feel pathetic. He’s literally telling the audience VERBATIM that right now even fufilling his dream worth of a decade. He STILL feels out of place. He’s not used to not being in the spotlight, not being revered. And not being top dog. HES UNCOMFORTABLE IN HIS OWN SKIN.

I do like certain parts of FUNs dub, but the emotional parts from Kai are MILES better. Gokus speech on Namek is so much better. You’re so right about Vegetas speech. A lot of the dialogue in the FUN dub is literally just carried by nostalgia

I honestly just don’t like the Z Dub, as someone who consumed the manga before the anime, it was so jarring to see how Superman-ized Goku was and how out of proportion they took Vegeta’s pride. The characters didn’t sound like themselves and there was just such a lack of professional-quality voice acting at time that when Z Kai came out, i genuinely was happy that the dub felt more like the manga and higher quality than before
