@no_way_this_is_real_: In 1893, a woman born enslaved in Kentucky, Nancy Green, was hired to play "Aunt Jemima," telling crowds stories of a happy Old South. Her image sold pancake mix for over a century. The real women behind the "mammy" myth had no choice in raising white children, were often forced to nurse them, and could be sold at any moment. In 1923, the U.S. Senate approved a national monument to "the faithful mammies of the South." Black Americans fought it, and it was never built. Nancy Green died that same year, almost unknown. The brand was retired in 2020. 🥞😢 #AuntJemima #NancyGreen #BlackHistory #AmericanHistory #HistoryYouShouldKnow
