My bad trips always involve the idea that I’ll be mentally disabled forever—that I’ll never feel sober again.

Is it possible that a survey like that could inadvertently select for class. Isn’t it possible that people who judge it worth their time to take a survey for $2 are less likely to have resources that make a positive trip experience more likely? Not trying to shame - I’d absolutely take a survey for $2, but I also couldn’t afford to say, pay for a trip sitter.

Bad trips works very similar to nightmares in dreams. The brains threat detection system (amygdala) becomes hyperactive.

my theory has always been that there is no bad trips, unless there's a medical/psych emergency

probably the best advice ive gotten for getting through a bad trip if it happens is just not trying to fight it, just buckle down, try to repeat that this isn't real, the trip will end eventually, and you will be fine, I've had a few trips that could've become bad trips but just buckling down, riding them out and trying to think about what the trip could be telling me about myself kept it from being something truely bad

The mood stabilizers coorilation with a bad trip - do we think thats because of the drugs interacting, or more because those individuals are already prone to struggling with things like psychosis? Or do we just not really know?

it's not that mood stabilizers affect the experience. it's that people that need mood stabilizers are not in a mental place to handle psychedelics..

I'm surprised that they didn't ask if the users were experienced with the substance and at what dose. Many inexperienced users go for a high dose and end up overwhelmed

I've been wondering what type of sciences are included in your experience with drug research. I've heard you talk about more of the mint-sciences but I would assume that a sociologist might also be useful in this research? would love to hear something about it :))

I think it has to do with how you are as a person anyhow. Never had a bad trip or even a nightmare. When I've explained my trips or even dreams to people, some people have said that would freak them out seriously. What's the difference? I'm me.... you are you. We are different people that respond differently to the same things. This simply comes down to our personality/character.

i have personal/family history w/ psychosis & trauma around death, so those themes when they are presented in a trip often give me anxiety, & fighting the experience can often also create a bad trip since it is so heavily influenced by your mental state & what lives there, so there are many factors that can lead to this along w environmental factors of course.

This is a fascinating study. And even though there is nuance, lack of psychological support, a major life event, poor music, a disagreeable physical environment and a negative mindset lead to challenges, regardless if you’re tripping or not. The guidelines for the likelihood of having a good trip are generally the guidelines for having a good day.
