At 59, the dead hang is one of the simplest exercises I refuse to overlook. No fancy equipment. No complicated setup. Just a pull-up bar and your bodyweight. And for men over 50, it can be a hell of an addition to your training. Here’s why I use it: 1️⃣ Builds serious grip strength Your hands and forearms have to support your bodyweight. And grip strength becomes increasingly important as we age. 2️⃣ Gives your back a great stretch Hanging can create a feeling of traction through your spine after hours of sitting, driving, or working at a desk. It’s not a cure for back pain, but it can help you feel less stiff. 3️⃣ Challenges overhead mobility Dead hangs put your shoulders in an overhead position and stretch your lats. Building comfort and control there can help with pressing, pulling, and everyday movement. 4️⃣ Gives you a break from all that sitting Most guys spend way too much time hunched over a desk, steering wheel, or phone. Hanging lets your shoulders and upper body spend time in a different position. 5️⃣ Builds the foundation for pull-ups If your grip gives out before your back does, your pulling strength is limited. Build the grip. Own the hanging position. Then build the pull-up. And bro, you don’t need to start with 60–90 seconds. Start with 10–20 seconds if that’s what you can control. Use your feet for support if needed, keep your shoulders comfortable, and slowly add time. The key is the same as any other exercise after 50: progress with a plan, not by guessing. That’s why I use Buffro to keep my training organized and my progress on track. Small improvements add up when you actually stick with them. Follow me for more strength training tips for men over 50. And if you want a more structured way to train, download Buffro and start building strength with a plan. #GripStrengthOver50 #DeadHangTraining #StrengthAfter50 #PullUpProgression #FitOver50
