@downinnadesert: Wild burros were caught fighting in the street in Oatman, the Route 66 ghost town in the Black Mountains of Mohave County. The burros that wander Oatman's main street are descendants of animals brought in by miners in the late 1800s and later turned loose. They are protected under the federal Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971, and even though they spend their days around visitors, they are still wild animals that can kick and bite. Every morning they come into town looking for food, then head back to the hills at night. Baby burros wear stickers on their heads asking people not to feed them, since they still rely on their mothers' milk. Signs at the approaches to town ask visitors not to feed the burros in the roadway. The BLM has also urged shops and tourists in the past to cut back on feeding, saying it was making the burros overweight and sick. The town's chamber of commerce says visitors can feed approved hay cubes sold in local shops. If you visit, give them space and keep your distance.
