This is exactly why i started my page sharing black fantasy and sci fi books bc i was tired of the same white books and 10 black fantasy books all the time

“Ignore the bigotry” + smart is not adding up for these straight men. Its because we dont ignore and understand the undertones is why we make our decision to shift towards a diverse medium of authors especially poc.

How can someone be well read if their reading choices are limited?

they don’t want to read diversely because they have no empathy and have never had to have empathy. also they’re, more likely that not, racist. i’ll be following along!

I would also encourage people to read outside of the west and especially the USA. If your diversity is only within American authors you will fall into the same trap

Of course, they’re so evolved because they can ignore diversity and center themselves 😅😒 Fable sounds awesome

I commented on an east of Eden show review saying the book is hard to get thru for me due to the overt racism the author HIMSELF projects, and it being a little boring, & a white girl replied “hating on john Steinbeck is a CRIME.” HUH?????? Mind you I’ve read Toni Morrison & James Baldwin so outside of the fact I never said anything about hating the dude - even tho I do lol, being from the town he writes half his books about & him being shoved down my throat in school - I KNOW what literary genius is.

They're always about "reading outside your comfort zone' or whatever, but it never seems to work both ways, huh.

What is ppls problem?! Widening your horizons makes you better at literary analysis, media analysis, and overall having a better pov on most things! Its so good for improving your vocabulary and learning of other cultures and worlds! I love Shakespeare as much as the next but if ppl keep hyping up Hemingway or Fitzgerald? Been there, done that, we need more diversity omfg.😭

Ngl when I saw Sm*tty post about East of Eden the other day and have absolutely nothing to say (even in passing) about the racism/misogyny present in the book particularly towards black women really disappointed me. Not saying you have to hate the book but to gush over it with not even a mention of its problematic elements is distasteful to say the least.

Most of their faves aren’t even that good—I’ve always ignored the label of “classic” when it’s a gold ring hanging on a pig of a book lol

Eww. That’s insane. Literally they have zero idea. When I was getting my literature degree, I remember having to chose courses specifically that would expand the classics to different voices bc the main courses were just white men 🤮

so depressing they don't get it. it's not even a new problem... I grew up in the dark ages and remember my English teacher complaining about the syllabus of old white men. that was in 1988! we did get to choose one non-list book to analyse and mine was Coonardoo by Kath Walker, an indigenous Australian writing about indigenous Australians.

I dont understand their statement that ignoring bigotry them critical thinkers. I'd arguing reading a book, understanding the deeper message, and STILL being able to point out the bigotry in it is a much clearer sign of critical thinking 😭

I think the saddest part is a lot of them have the comfort of existing only in genres pleasant to them disregarding the diverse experiences of others.
