@theherculeannyc: Neil Hughes may have had the most unpredictable life of anyone in the 7 Up series. At seven, he was a bright, funny boy from Liverpool who said he wanted to become an astronaut. But by his teens, he already seemed far more anxious and unsettled. He briefly attended Aberdeen University, dropped out after one term, and by 21 Up was living in a squat in London and working occasional construction jobs. By 28 Up, he was homeless in Scotland and struggling with depression. (Big Issue) His story could easily have ended there, but it didn’t. By 35 Up, Neil was living in the Shetland Islands, writing and performing in local theatre. Later, fellow Up participant Bruce Balden became an important source of support, even giving Neil a place to stay. Neil went on to earn a degree through the Open University and eventually entered politics, becoming a Liberal Democrat councillor. He also became a lay Baptist preacher. (Big Issue) What makes Neil so compelling is that he has never tried to turn his life into a simple story of triumph over adversity. Even after finding stability, he continued to speak openly about depression, loneliness and his own sense that his life had not turned out as he once imagined. Now, in 70 Up, Neil is living permanently in France and leading a largely solitary life. He looks back candidly on the years when he slept in squats, sheds and even, at one point, a bulldozer. Yet there is also a sense of acceptance in him that wasn’t always there in the earlier films. (Site Proxy) Neil began Seven Up! as one of its happiest and most optimistic children. What followed was homelessness, depression, faith, friendship, education and politics—a life that repeatedly collapsed and rebuilt itself. And perhaps more than anyone else in the series, Neil challenged the original idea behind 7 Up: the child at seven did not necessarily tell you who the man would become. #7up #70up #itv @ITV

The saddest part about Neil is that if he’d come from a wealthier family or had more support, he was brilliant and full of ideas. As a late-diagnosed AuDHD girlie, I also see the neurodivergence. He has a good heart, a clever mind, a lot of ideas and he just needed a little more support to get there, it feels so unfair. Hard hard watch. I love this series!

Neil made a comment when he was older about not having achieved much with his life but I actually felt that he had lived more lives than anyone else on the programme

Neil wrestled with his mental health for so long. I feel he has been mostly successful in keeping his demons at bay, and I hope he manages to have some happiness.
