Today was another milestone in this chapter: my first Zoladex injection! Since my breast cancer is hormone receptor-positive, estrogen can act like fuel for any remaining cancer cells. The goal is to take away as much of that “fuel” as possible. Even though chemotherapy already put me into menopause, that doesn’t always mean it’s permanent. Zoladex helps keep my ovaries “asleep” by lowering estrogen production, giving me another layer of protection while I go through treatment and recovery. This is now part of my new normal. I’ll be getting a Zoladex injection every month for the next 5–10 years. 😵‍💫 I haven’t had the conversation with my oncologist yet about exactly how long my treatment plan will be, but I know this is going to be a long-term commitment…and one I’m grateful to have if it helps reduce my risk of recurrence. One thing that surprised me today…I actually didn’t get the injection in my belly like most people do. Because I don’t have much fat on my abdomen right now, my nurse gave it in my thigh instead, which is also an approved injection site. I had heard so many stories about how intimidating this injection can be, so I went in prepared. I iced the area beforehand... and honestly? I didn’t feel a thing. My nurse was an absolute pro. Before I knew it, it was over. If your first Zoladex injection is coming up, I hope this eases your mind a little. Everyone’s experience is different, but I wanted to share mine because not knowing what to expect is the scariest part in my opinion! #breastcancer #breastcancerjourney #breastcancerawarness
