@thestomachdoc: Fart facts from a gastroenterologist 💨 Farting more does NOT automatically mean you have an unhealthy gut. A large Australian study found people farted about 5 times per day on average, and nearly 80% farted between 2–7 times a day. Other research suggests even up to about 20 times a day can still be normal. And if you eat a high-fiber diet, you may fart even more. That’s because your gut bacteria ferment fiber, producing gas in the process. So more gas after increasing fiber can simply mean your gut microbiome is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. The smell is different from the amount of gas. Strong-smelling farts are often related to sulfur-containing gases produced during digestion. What matters more is whether your gas suddenly changes or comes with severe bloating, abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea or constipation, weight loss, or blood in your stool. So stop judging your gut health by how many times you fart. Your other symptoms tell us a lot more.
