I loved this story, so I made an interactive version on Cycle AI where you can step into any character and live it yourself. My name is Tess Carter, and before the dead started walking, I was a morning radio producer. That meant I knew schedules, receipts, tired people, and how to keep my face calm while everything behind it wanted to scream. It did not mean I knew how to survive a Springfield broadcast studio. The first infected person I saw was the anchor who turned live on air. At first, I tried to explain it away, because the brain will do humiliating gymnastics before it admits the world is ending. Then the screaming started. I survived the first attack with a microphone stand. It was not brave. It was ugly, panicked, and too close. I hit until my arms shook, until the thing in front of me stopped moving, and until I understood that stopping was different from dying. Outside, the place I knew had become a trap full of familiar voices making unfamiliar sounds. I should have grabbed my old life on the way out. My phone. My keys. The little proof that yesterday had been real. Instead, I ran with Ryan, the traffic reporter, because running had suddenly become the only skill I trusted. For a few minutes, escape almost looked possible. Then the roads filled with crashes, gunshots, and people who kept walking after they should have fallen. That was when Beau found me with a mud-splattered cattle hauler. He did not save me gently. He pointed a shotgun at me and asked if I had been bitten. I said no, because it was true and because I wanted very badly for him to believe me. Ryan, the traffic reporter was not so lucky. I thought shock had made him pale and sweaty. Then his eyes changed, and Beau shot him before I could even say his name. Warm blood hit me. The gun turned toward me next. I had no speech prepared for the possibility of being mercy-killed by a stranger. Beau let me live anyway, but only because I still looked human. He took me to a cattle farm with no neighbors in sight. Safety, I learned, did not feel soft anymore. It felt like locked doors, burned clothes, scrubbed blood, rationed food, and rules spoken in a voice that did not care if I liked them. I begged to stay. He asked what I could do besides be scared. The answer was embarrassing. So that night, when he tied my wrists and ankles before letting me sleep, I hated him. By morning, I understood him. If I had turned in the dark, hate would not have saved anyone. After sunrise, I cut off what could be grabbed, picked up what could be swung, and practiced until fear had somewhere to go. I was still scared. I was simply busier. Then Eli arrived covered in blood and grief. The person who had rescued me was gone, and suddenly I was the adult in the room. That would have been funny before the outbreak. Now it was just true. I asked if Eli had been bitten. I made him clean up. I fed him. Then I tied him before bed, because kindness without caution had started getting people eaten. That night, beer cans dangling from baling wire screamed in the dark. For one second, I waited for someone stronger. Then I remembered no one was coming. I picked up a rifle, missed once, breathed, corrected, and fired again. The dead thing dropped before it reached us. When Beau came back, he saw the body outside, the kid still human, and me still standing. He said I did good. I almost cried, not because I needed praise, but because I finally believed I might live long enough to earn it twice. By the time the stations went silent, I was broadcasting only one message to myself: survive the next hour. #Cycleai #BookTok #ZombieSurvival #PostApocalyptic #SurvivalHorror StrongFemaleLead DystopianFiction BookRecs
