37 YEARS AGO TODAY: ACROPOLIS NOW DEBUTED ON AUSSIE TV. On 9 August 1989, Channel Seven introduced Australia to the wonderfully chaotic world of the Acropolis Café when Acropolis Now premiered. And Aussie television comedy was never quite the same again. Set around a Greek café in Melbourne, the show followed Jim Stefanidis, played by Nick Giannopoulos, his mate Ricky, the unforgettable Memo played by George Kapiniaris, along with Liz, Skip, Manolis and eventually one of the biggest breakout comedy characters of the era, Effie, played by Mary Coustas. “Hello, good thanks.” And Memo referring to Aussies as “Skippys” became part of the language for an entire generation. The series actually grew out of the hugely successful stage production Wogs Out of Work, created by Giannopoulos, Kapiniaris and Simon Palomares. Crawford Productions saw the potential and turned the idea into a television sitcom. What made Acropolis Now stand out was that it was unapologetically multicultural at a time when Australian television was still overwhelmingly Anglo. A lot of the comedy came from Greek-Australian family life, immigrant parents, second-generation kids, food, accents, relationships and the constant cultural clash between the characters. Looking back, it was actually pretty significant. George Kapiniaris has said they didn’t realise at the time just how important the show would become in representing multicultural Australia. And then there was Effie. Big hair, massive personality and absolutely no filter. Mary Coustas turned what started as Jim’s cousin into arguably the most enduring character to come out of the entire show. Effie became so popular that Coustas continued playing her for decades afterwards. Acropolis Now eventually ran for five seasons and 63 episodes, finishing in November 1992. It is one of those shows that immediately takes you back to late-80s and early-90s Australian television. Sitting in the lounge after dinner, Channel Seven on the TV and hearing that theme song start. Who was your favourite: Jim, Memo, Ricky or Effie? And more importantly...
