I still cannot get pass how we could so clearly see the mitochondria at this much details. Here is a comparison between an electron micrograph of a mitochondrion (a stock image I found from The Science Library) and my video of a living mitochondrion imaged with a super-resolution confocal microscope. Did you know that while you can do incredibly detailed imaging with an electron microscope, the samples will always have to be killed because they would need to be embedded in some toxic metal chemicals for contrast and also would be blasted with rays of electrons? But this is not the case with confocal microscopy where the samples can be dead or alive, and we use lights to image them.
