She can give wealth, healing, and protection, but she is also jealous, territorial, and dangerous to anyone who treats her rivers like a playground. That is exactly what Ash Dykes is doing right now. He is preparing to paddle an inflatable kayak roughly 434 miles down the Sangha River through the Congo Basin, one of the most remote and crocodile-filled stretches of water on earth. The missing bag and the delay in Cameroon already feel like a warning. Hendrik Coetzee was taken by a crocodile on a Congo river in 2010 and never seen again, and a lot of people watching this trip are not only worried about hippos, malaria, and the jungle. They are worried about Mami Wata, because outsiders keep entering her water without permission, without offerings, and without understanding that the river has an owner. I believe she is real, and I believe this expedition is walking straight into her territory. Local guides and communities along those rivers do not talk about her as folklore. They talk about her as something you respect if you want to come back. An inflatable boat, a camera, and a world-record attempt do not change whose water that is. If Ash Dykes makes it through the Sangha, it will not be because the danger was exaggerated. It will be because Mami Wata let him pass.
