La dermatitis por slime es una dermatitis de contacto irritativa que aparece en niños, y también en adultos, que juegan con frecuencia con esta masa viscosa casera o comercial. El slime suele prepararse con pegamento escolar, colorantes y un activador como el borato sódico, conocido como bórax, presente en detergentes para la ropa, o el ácido bórico. En algunos casos puede tratarse de una dermatitis de contacto alérgica a conservantes como la metilisotiazolinona presente en pegamentos y jabones. El diagnóstico es clínico y se basa en preguntar por juegos y manualidades; si la dermatitis persiste a pesar de evitar el slime, se recomiendan pruebas epicutáneas para descartar alergia. Debe diferenciarse de la dermatitis atópica y de otras dermatitis de manos. El tratamiento consiste en suspender el juego con slime, lavar las manos con agua tibia y un limpiador suave, aplicar emolientes varias veces al día y, si hay inflamación, un corticoide tópico de baja o media potencia durante pocos días. Si el niño quiere seguir jugando, conviene usar guantes y lavar bien las manos al terminar.
