Unfortunately orthopaedic public outpatient clinics almost all have a long wait like that and it sucks, but there are always more people needing to be seen than doctors who are available, so the wait is unavoidable. That said - elbow injuries are super tough so if you can rebook ASAP and make sure to block out half a day for the appointment it would help you get the best outcome, but might be good to bring some headphones or a book for whilst you wait 😬

Unfortunately you pay with your time or your pay with your money… I’m an RN at an urgent care in the Goldie.. you could pay to go to the private fracture clinic in Southport, its a collaborative clinic with ortho and physio.

I would recommend just waiting the 3 hours. It took me 3 months just to get into see my ortho surgeon (I was ready to book surgery fyi and I was a previous patient who reinjured something we tried to go non surgical with) and then after the appointment I still had to wait 1.5 months for surgery because he was booked out.

Your appointment letter tells you generally to allow 3 hours.

Welcome to public, understaffed and overwhelmed! How many people do you think have just cut out health insurance because they can’t afford it…🤷🏻♀️

Go to a physiotherapist - musculoskeletal physio (or certified hand specialist) I used to work at a good one (as admin) they do waterproof cast and can help alot. They usually work with orthopaedics specialists. I don’t know what your injury is but it might be quicker to see a decent physio.

Book in to a specialised hand therapist. There’s a few on the gold coast. A lot of them work directly with specialists so often can contact them directly and get you looked at

sadly you're gonna have to wait the three hours or don't see a specialist. They're like that no matter which specialist you see. And you'll have the same issue literally anywhere in the country.

I had to see a public ophthalmologist (eye specialist) a couple of years ago and was in the waiting room for 5 hours! I don’t know if it’s the same with orthopaedic surgeons but they often get calls and requests to see people within other parts of the hospital while doing clinic days. It’s rough but it’s how the public system is unfortunately!

Most of the time they are are ‘arrival times’ not ‘appointment times’ because they are clinics. It sucks!

I work in a major public hospital in Melbourne and it’s the same. Unfortunately it is a combo of being understaffed, Dr’s showing up late, Pt’s showing up late (30mins + and still expecting to be seen), Appts running over time - even if it’s 5 mins, doesn’t seem like much but all adds up, Pt’s who need XR’s before and don’t get them so once again pushes things back, Dr’s who get called into emergency surgery’s etc. Kills us when people don’t show up at all as well, as public appointments in outpatient clinics can take months to years, and meant someone else could have filled that spot. Most outpatient clinics are also overbooked… Deliberately! As the amount of people who don’t show outweighs those who do, and on the rare occasion everyone will show it delays appt times. Best thing is to advocate for these Dr’s. Typically, it is Junior Dr’s who run the clinics; they work an absurd amount of hours, and are paid next to nothing for the amount of work they do. Sucks on both ends, but unfortunately that’s how the public system works/is.

People’s appointments run over, the time given isn’t enough, emergencies get added to the list. Unfortunately you’re now not only a no show, but possibly also been labelled as aggressive. Three hours was better than 3 months surely- I hope you find a solution that works for you.

There are many private upper limb surgeons in both the Gold Coast & Brisbane! Most will be able to see you relatively quickly

Learn from my mistake- I recommend booking the private specialist in the meantime anyway bc November will roll around quicker than you think + with getting stuffed around by the public system, and you’d have wished u had kept that private appt that seems so far away. Also ask to be on a cancellation list for the private specialist!

Yes, understaffed and they don’t tell you it’s a “clinic” day and they have everyone booked for the same slot. So fucked!
