I’ve experienced something similar but with my father. After my mother died, I became distant and easily agitated. I was 19, and my mother had died rather suddenly from a short battle with cancer. I was hurting so much and my father tried everything to cheer me up by trying to bond with me and get closer. I was distant. 6 months later, almost to the day, my father was going out to do some cycling exercise, and I was told to stay at home and watch the dog while he was out. His last words to me were “bye son, I love you.” I simply said “bye.”. Not even 30 minutes later, I heard a helicopter fly over our house, and just about 10 minutes later, a police officer came knocking on our door. “Are you related? There has been an accident.” I ask how bad it is, and I’m told he’s being resuscitated and transported to the hospital. I had to make the phone call to my siblings to let them know what had happened and to come home immediately. After a long night, we got the news that while they had successfully resuscitated him, he wasn’t going to make it without a machine, and that’d he’d likely never be conscious again, so we had the difficult choice of having to cut off his life support. My last words to him while he was still conscious were simply “bye.” It’s been 6 years since this happened, and I am still so angry at myself for it. I thought I’d have so much longer with him. I was 19 years old when I had lost both my parents, and I couldn’t even spare a moment of my time to say “I love you.” to my father. He had lost his wife of 32 years so I know he was hurting too, and instead of being there for him when he needed me, I became distant.
