I’ve always wondered why Americans drink so much—in general, not just water. I drink maybe two glasses a day.

In the US they can do all those free refills cause they can afford it since they are not actually paying their employees..in European countries..the employers actually pay their employees,so they can't afford to give out everything for free..they've paid for those sodas..if they don't profit from them..how is that waitress gonna get paid???From tips? No thanks..we do not want to beg customers for tips so we can live..🥰🥰🥰

Here is my theory. In order to pay our staff a decent salary, we need to earn money. If we give out free stuff, we won’t. Besides that, I was never turned down a glass of water if you need one.

The rise of sports drinks like Gatorade in the 1980s, followed by an explosion of bottled water brands in the 1990s and 2000s, tied hydration directly to peak physical performance and wellness The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that 90% of Americans consume high levels of sodium, which can naturally increase thirst

It’s because we have a different outtake on life, for Americans it doesn’t really have to be good quality as long it’s a lot. You have your soda pop like from these sugar syrup fountains while here you get a fresh 25cl bottle every time 🤷‍♀️

I don’t understand why Americans just can’t ask for tap water? It’s perfectly normal.

Wait, what? Things are different in Europe? 😳 Ok, so we don’t get free refills, but we don’t go bankrupt to see a doctor.

Water is simply not free, not even tapwater. Also I always learned not to drink during the meal, but to wait till after. I don't know exactly why, but we all grew up like that.

I was recently in Amsterdam and had to carry around a water bottle because at the restaurants you get the smallest drink. I’ve finished the it before I even got the meal.

Here’s my theory: in Europe most money restaurants make comes from drinks, also because we are in restaurants much longer than in the US - so you eat one meal but then stay and talk and order drinks. In the US the want you to leave as soon as you finished your meal or order more food. So restaurants earn more with the food they sell - and free refills of sugary drinks messes up your blood sugar and makes you eat/order more food.

In Germany the free refills are not factored in the price of the drinks.

Think of the price for water as tips. I think you will get several glasses of water for the difference in "normal" tips here and there.

Beverages make up a significant portion of their revenue. I think they give out free water if you tip them 20%.

The prices in USA are set to cover the “free” refills, in Germany they are not. It is not like US restaurants are actually giving it out for free, those only wanting to have one or two glasses are the ones paying for the drinks consumed by those that drink more. Very weird behavior of your mom …

there are no free refills advertised, because you can get free refills everywhere... from nearly any tap water. Just go to a bathroom and refill. thus most people simply do not drink a lot of water in restaurants... and they sell fancy water to make a margin. that being said, very often you can just ask for a glass of tap water (which will usually be free, but you should tip well if they do this for you).

Because beverages are a huge percentage of revenue and we need money to pay our workers fairly 😏 Why do you drink so much? I never understood that - how are you constantly drinking?
