@hospicenursepenny: Interrupting a person when they are trying to check out of life can keep them here and not in a good way #Hospice #HospiceNurse #Education #onthisday
A nurse did this to my Mom and I was so angry. I asked the Hospice person why she had oxygen on as she was starting to transition. She removed it and would tell the nurse no oxygen because it was prolonging the process. i left the room and when I returned the nurse again replaced the oxygen. i was so angry.

My grandad is on hospice now , my grandmother rarely gives him a minute of peace I feel so bad she’s also refusing any kind of pain medication. I’ve argued with her about it but she has the final say idk how to help him at this point.

I held my husbands Nanna's hand while she passed. I sat at her side for 6 hours, my 6 week old in my other arm. All I did was quietly hum, and whisper to her that we loved her and promised to take care of everyone. It was quiet and peaceful and I refused to disturb her. My husband and his family were in the room (his dad was her only living child and my husband was her only grandchild) but couldn't bring themselves to touch her after she stopped responding and talking. It was a rough, but peaceful day.

I got so angry with my MIL when my husband was actively dying. Everyone else in the family had told him, it's okay for you to go. Not her. She kept on, Hang on, Steve! Hang on! I wanted to tell her to knock it off, but I knew it would just start a fight. The entire time he was ill, she was being self-centered and causing all kinds of drama. Even on his deathbed, she was making everything about her.

The best thing you can do for someone who is actively passing is tell them it’s okay to go. That we will be okay, it’s time and you can go. My mother and I both said this to my sister who died at 35. She wasn’t conscious but we said it anyway. We didn’t want her to feel any “roadblocks” there was nothing left for her to come back to anyway. Her body was done, there was no chance to recover for her. She passed about an hour later

I remember my grandmother going through this ,I wasn’t there and she kept yelling at my grandfather who’s been gone since 1978 that she needed to wait for me to get there , I wasn’t in whole other state , dad put the phone to her ear and I told her I loved her and it was okay to go with my papa I would see her one day and I don’t want her suffering, they hung up the phone and a few minutes later I got the call she was gone … she needed to hear I was okay with her going !

I've been through this with 2 people that I love with all my heart. It was not easy, but I tried to present myself calm. Held their hands. Quiet words

I was a hospice aide in the past. Once, I was assigned to a new patient, and was just asked to "keep an eye" on the patient. He was barely awake. Patient had a live-in. My 2nd day, I came in and the substitute live-in arrived the same time. Patient looked and acted the same-half asleep. I introduced myself, looked at him and at the live-in. I had the live-in step outside the room with me and I whispered, "You more than likely will not be staying for very long." She got really confused. We walked back into the room literally 2 minutes later, and patient was 🕊 gone. I didnt know how to approach the wife. Luckily the hospice nurse was nearby and she came immediately after i called.

That's a flashback to when my dad was dying. Lots of people were in the room. For some reason the CNA felt the need to move him. It clearly made him uncomfortable, but he opened his eyes and gasped. My cousins got all excited that he was coming back. Ridiculous. I'm still pissed about it. I feel like the excitement kept him holding on longer. Once we shooed everyone out he relaxed and died

The last gift you can your loved one is let them know it’s ok. “Go in peace I love you and thank you for all you brought to my life”

I always make the distinction of prolonging life vs delaying death. Too many people delay loved ones death unnecessarily

My grandpa was confused but would come out now and then and say absolutely heartfelt things, like telling my grandma how much her loved her and so happy that they had a wonderful marriage and got to share their lives together. He said goodbyes to me, my mom, and my grandpa. He told me “you know I love you soooo much.” I was a grandpa’s girl from the day I was born. He wanted me more than my own parents did. I spent a lot of my childhood with my grandparents. He knew he was dying before we did. As we were in the hospice room at the hospital, he would be unconscious and then suddenly do an accurate count of his 5 children and me and make sure we all said we were there. He took his last breath while listening to Lawrence Welk and we all had the honor of being right there with him the whole way.

Penny, such a gentle reminder for families sitting with someone at the end. Sometimes love means letting them rest.
